Cosmetic Surgery Complications
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is to surgically alter sagging or drooping lids and eyelashes that may mar vision. The method basically corrects the lids but does not help with wrinkles and sagging brows. Another operation is necessary to correct these imperfections. The procedure itself consists of just trimming away excess skin and removing fat that may have accumulated due mainly to age through precise incisions. The patient does not necessarily need to undergo general anesthesia, just local anesthetic or sedation.
Recovery
While eyelid surgery lasts about a maximum of three hours, barring any complications, recovery period may be longer but can be done at the patient’s home. A companion is necessary for the patient since sight will not be available immediately after due to the bandages which will protect the eyes and the incisions. The surgeon will lubricate the eyes extensively directly after the procedure before putting on the bandages. Antibiotic medication will be prescribed to the individual to circumvent complications due to infections.
There will be a certain amount of discomfort and pain to be expected post operation. Painkillers are usually prescribed by the facilitating doctor to help the patient deal with the pain and discomfort. Not everybody has the same level of tolerance so it is best to report any pain that may be excessive to the doctor in charge.
The hospital will issue a list of dos and don’ts to facilitate faster recovery. This may include how and when to clean and lubricate eyes, use cold compresses for discomfort and swelling and how to position the head when sleeping. Straining the organs responsible for sight by watching TV or using the computer is not allowed as well as the use of eye makeup or any other type of facial make up and contact lenses several days after eyelid surgery.
Possible Risks and Complications
Though blepharoplasty is considered to be a safe and common, there are risks and complications which any patient should be aware of before undergoing it. As with all other invasive surgery, there is always a risk of an infection developing. This is the reason why surgeons always prescribe antibiotics post operation.
Dissatisfaction with the operation is also another risk that may arise since not all eyelids are equal although the reduction of fat and muscles from both areas are equally done. Insufficient or excessive removal of the dermis around the area may result to a touch up. Too much removal of the dermis may result to disfigurement which is objectionable and may need more extensive surgery to correct.
In all, recovery time should be several weeks but the stitches should be taken out after just a few days. Rest is recommended during the first week after the procedure and work can be resumed about ten to fourteen days after the operation.
