What to Consider When Having Cosmetic Surgery Abroad

Over the past couple of years, there has been an explosion of surgical centers overseas who advertise the same care and results as cosmetic surgery one would have here in the United States. The advertising for these is very attractive, because of the soaring costs of elective and non-elective medical procedures here. However, there are many things to consider when having cosmetic surgery abroad.

Price, as mentioned, is obviously the primary reason for people to consider having cosmetic surgery elsewhere. Insurance here (and in many other countries with people considering overseas surgery) often doesn’t cover these types of procedures, and there can be a substantial savings in having it done elsewhere. But, before moving on to other considerations, it’s worth noting that the full price of the surgery may not be included in the advertisement or in your budget.

Many overseas cosmetic surgery centers are, in fact, legitimate candidates for performing the surgery you wish to have. But they may not fully advertise the cost after factoring travel costs. In many cases, this is not just plane fare, but the cost of the recovery center or hotel you may have to use before and after. The cost of any ground transportation must be taken into account, as must food costs.

More importantly, one must be very clear about charges for things like anesthesia, nursing care, bandages, medicines and doctor visits apart from the actual surgery. These can be quite considerable when you add them all up, and though many centers will provide these in an all-inclusive, upfront price, it’s important to make sure to get it in writing.

Consider the worst-case scenario in terms of recovery time. Tack on a few extra days on to what the center advertises as the average post-recovery stay, and factor this into the overall price.

Next, consider the language barrier. Since the cosmetic surgery business overseas no doubt uses your mother tongue when advertising, and most likely the staff can speak it, don’t assume that everyone you rely on through your trip will. Consider the percentage of people who can speak your language who are involved with your care, and certainly those involved with your lodging and aftercare. A medical procedure, no matter how big or small, can be very serious and you need to be able to communicate not just what your surgical goals are, but any bad or worsening symptoms you might have afterwards.

About the Author

What would be your emergency recourse should something go wrong with your surgery, or if you don’t like the results? Be sure to consider whether you would want a friend or relative to join you on your trip, so you can have someone watching out for your best interests. Of course, this should be factored into the cosmetic surgery costs discussed above.

Also, be sure to ask for, and check, several references from people who have received the surgery. Better yet, make sure they hail from the state you live in, so you can ask about how well they traveled, and what, if anything, to beware. Another question to ask them is how clean the facilities were or are, and whether they and the postoperative experience were pleasant and reasonable.

No matter where you have cosmetic plastic surgery, and no matter how many precautions are taken, results are not always predictable. Be sure to read the fine print when considering cosmetic surgery abroad, and remember that you may not have the same, if any, legal or medical recourse should something go wrong. And, of course, consider becoming a reference yourself should you have the best possible experience.
