Cosmetic Surgery – Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are substance used for cosmetic enhancement. These substances include collagen, hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, polymers, and others. New substances are being used all the time. Donor fat tissue or one’s own fat can also be used. Substances used are usually synthetic materials, although, as mentioned, fat can be used. Dermal filler brand names include Juvederm, Artefill, Radiesse, Hylaform and Restylane.
Common areas to use a dermal filler include the cheeks, lips, around the eyes, the bridge of the nose and the jaw line. Dermal fillers are injected to eliminate crow’s feet, to eliminate wrinkles, or to enhance features. Sometimes they’re used to reduce the effects of acne scarring or to correct scarring from injuries. Dermal fillers can be used to reduce gauntness from illness or aging. Facelifts will also produce similar and permanent results but they are more invasive than dermal fillers. Different dermal fillers have different strengths and weaknesses and some will last longer than others. Sometimes dermatologists choose to use a combination of different fillers and each dermatologist can come up with a specific combination for each patient.
Hyaluronic acid binds with water to give skin more volume and, like human collagen, doesn’t need to be skin tested. This makes these substances of preference by some dermatologists. If a dermatologist decides to use a patient’s own fat, it is usually removed from the stomach, buttocks or thighs through micro-dermabrasion. The substance calcium hydroxyapatite gives longer lasting benefits because it degrades more slowly than other substances. Bruising, bleeding, pain during injection and pain for a few days after injection are common side effects of the use of dermal fillers. There have been reports of some allergic reactions. Each different substance carries its own possible risks.
Do dermal fillers work? The effect of dermal fillers generally last for up to eight months. Whether they work or not depends on what the dermal filler is used for, which dermal filler is used and how serious the problem is that you are dealing with. The good news is that if you don’t care for the results of the treatment, you can just wait for the results to disappear. This will give you a choice as to whether you want to have another treatment. It also gives you a chance to see how you feel about the improvements to your face so that you can either decide to have another treatment or perhaps to choose more permanent plastic surgery.
